Characters Õ Syngué sabourPierre de patience 102 En Afghanistan peut être ou ailleurs une femme veille son mari blessé Au fond ils ne se connaissent pas Les heures et les jours passent tandis ue la guer. It is a vexing fact that women are the most beleaguered members of Afghan society Long before the arrival of the Taliban Afghan women struggled for basic rights Outside of a few urban pockets the ironclad rule of patriarchal tribal law has long denied women their right to work education adeuate health care and personal independence all of this made infinitely worse by three decades of war displacement and anarchy Afghan womanThough there have been some improvements in recent years far too many women continue to languish under the unuestioned absolute domination of tribal customs that deprive them of meaningful participation in societal life For far too long Afghan women have been faceless and voiceless Khaled HosseiniIn Afghanistan in a small rectangular room with turuoise walls and two curtains patterned with migrating birds frozen mid flight against a yellow and blue sky lies a comatose man on a red mattress on the floor He has been shot in the neck in a trivial brawl over honour He has a beard pepper and salt He is thin too thin His nose is hawk like His eyes have retreated into his sockets His arms lie passive along his sides Beneath his translucent skin the veins twine around the jutting bones of his body like sleeping worms A tube drips clear liuid into the crook of his arm from a plastic pouch attached to the wall just above his headA hand a woman s hand is resting on his chest over his heart rising and falling in time with his breath The woman is seated Knees pulled into her chest Head sunk between her knees In her other hand the left she holds a long string of black prayer beads Within reach open at the flyleaf and placed on a velvet pillow is a book the Koran The woman murmurs Al ahhar The man has been sick for sixteen days and the sixteenth name of God is Al ahhar the Dominant She repeats Al ahhar each time the man takes a breath And with every repetition one of the prayer beads slips through her fingers There are ninety nine beads Ninety nine times Al ahhar Only then is one cycle of the prayer beads complete The woman s passage of time is measured by the cycles of the prayer beads and the breaths of the manAll around them in the city and in the neighbourhood bombs explodeThe man is the woman s husband They have been married for ten years the first three while he was away fighting Not having attended his own marriage it was finally consummated at the end of the third yearThe woman asks Allah to make her husband well again so that he can return to her and their two small daughters She tenderly cares for him night and day changing the intravenous tube placing drops in his eyes and bathing him washing his feet his belly his genitals The woman tends to her husband After a while his enforced silence frees the woman to speak Your breath hangs on the ceiling of my secrets she says savouring the reversal of power I can talk to you about anything without being interrupted or blamed The supine object of her dramatic monologue becomes her sang e sabur the patience stone of Persian lore to which you confess everything in your heart everything you don t dare tell anyone The magic stone listens absorbing all your words all your secrets until one fine day it explodesAnd on that day you are set free from all your pain all your suffering During this process the woman becomes increasingly aware of the enormity of the injustices she has suffered In the monologues that follow the reader listens in on her tirades lamenting a life of misery in a society marked by brutality and neglectThis book contains crystal clear prose which completely captivates the reader Every word counts in short sentences redolent with symbolism An example of such prose is detailed below A fly sneaks into the heavy hush of the room Lands on the man s forehead Hesitant Uncertain Wanders over his wrinkles licks his skin No taste Definitely no taste The fly makes its way down into the corner of his eye Still hesitant Still uncertain It tastes the white of the eye then moves off Nothing chases it away It resumes its journey getting lost in the beard climbing the nose Takes flight Explores the body Returns Settles once on the face Clambers on to the tube stuffed into the half open mouth Licks it moves right along it to the edge of the lips No spit No taste The fly continues enters the mouth And is engulfed The story s suspense undoubtedly comes from the unresolved situation at the bedside of the woman s half dead husband in whom the woman confides and of her innermost thoughts and most intimate secrets while continuing to care for him In the end it all unexpectedly comes to a head in a catastrophe that can not be revealed hereThe author Ati Rahimi Born in Afghanistan in 1962 Ati Rahimi fled to France in 1984 There he made his name as a writer film and documentary maker of exceptional note Since 2001 he has returned to Afghanistan many times to se up a Writers House in Kabul and offer support and training to young writers and film makersHe was the winner of the Goncourt Prize 2008 for The Patience StoneBy spotlighting the civil strife under Taliban rule the novel tells in its discreet way the hopeless plight and underserved oppression of the women in Afghanistan It is also testimony to Rahimi s literary skills how vividly the war on the streets is depicted even though the entire tale unfolds within the confines of a single roomThe Patience Stone is a deceptively simple book written in spare prose but is a rich read with exploration of honour love sex marriage and war It is an important and courageous book giving voice to those who suffer most and cry out the least Women who have been objectified marginalised scorned beaten ridiculed and silencedHighly recommended
